What is the standard thickness of a concrete driveway?
Four inches is generally enough for a home driveway that carries cars or SUVs of 3,000 to 6,000 pounds, one published guide says. Expect truck traffic, or an RV that can weigh 12,000 pounds and up, and the same guide says the drive may need 5 or 6 inches. The Michigan Concrete Association's driveway guideline sets the same 4-inch minimum and asks for 5 inches when delivery vehicles use the drive.
Where a Waco driveway reaches the street, the City's standard residential approach detail calls for 6 inches of reinforced concrete.

Is a thicker driveway worth the money?
Adding an inch, from 4 to 5, raises the concrete cost by about 20% and lifts load capacity by nearly 50%, the Tennessee Concrete Association says. Edges can also be thickened by 1 to 2 inches, since they take heavy loads with less soil support. Nationally, a 4-inch driveway runs $6 to $15 per square foot and a 6-inch one $8 to $20 (2025).
