Accessibility rules for ramps on Waco sites
The 2010 ADA Standards apply at places of public accommodation, commercial facilities and state and local government facilities. On City sidewalks, Waco's notes (sheet SW-1) require compliance with the U.S. Access Board's right-of-way guidelines, known as PROWAG.
Curb ramps in the right-of-way
SW-1 caps a curb ramp at 1:12 unless the plans note otherwise, makes it at least 5 feet wide without the flared sides, and wants landings 5 by 5 feet or larger, sloped 2% at most in any direction. Accessible stalls belong to the parking lot layout, and the approach walk to our Waco sidewalks work.

Measure the rise
Tell us the height to the door. One run may climb 30 inches at most, so the rise sets the number of runs.
Permit the street side
In the right-of-way, the City issues concrete permits only to bonded concrete contractors, and a permit lapses if active work has not begun within 60 days.
Form, pour and texture
Outdoor flatwork gets a broom texture for a non-slip surface, NRMCA says, and never a sprinkle of water or cement to ease finishing, which causes dusting or scaling.

(254) 309-9254ADA ramp cost and City fees
We have no published ADA ramp price to quote, so each ramp is priced from its rise, runs and landings. In the right-of-way the City adds inspection fees: $376.67 per pedestrian ramp, $55.53 per permit and $0.95 per square foot of sidewalk (effective September 1, 2024). Steps and lots near a ramp are on our full Waco service list.
ADA ramp questions
What are the ADA requirements for ramps?
In the 2010 ADA Standards, a ramp run may be no steeper than 1:12, may rise no more than 30 inches and must be at least 36 inches wide, on a surface that is stable, firm and slip resistant.
How long does a ramp need to be for a 2 foot rise?
At least 24 feet of run, before any landings. At 1:12, each inch of rise needs 12 inches of run, so 24 inches of rise needs 288 inches (our arithmetic on the 2010 ADA Standards), inside one run's 30-inch limit.
What are the ADA sidewalk requirements in Texas?
On accessible routes, the 2010 ADA Standards want walking surfaces at least 36 inches clear, sloped no steeper than 1:20 along the way and 1:48 across it. Public sidewalks in Waco must meet PROWAG, and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation lists Elimination of Architectural Barriers among its 41 programs. Ask your designer which rules govern your site.
Do ADA rules apply to a ramp at a private home?
Not the 2010 ADA Standards, which don't cover the purely residential part of a private home. The residential code's 2015 text wants guards at least 36 inches high on open-sided ramps more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below; Waco enforces the 2024 edition, so confirm with Inspection Services.
