From Mudtown to a Farm Road 933 city
Settlers reached this corner of southwestern Hill County in the 1840s, the Texas State Historical Association says, because its timber stood nearest to Hillsboro, and the place was first called Mudtown; a post office followed in 1859. A 1968 state historical marker, just west of where FM 3370 meets FM 1133, dates the townsite survey to 1879, when the Texas Central Railroad was built through Hill County.
Aquilla sits on Farm Road 933, twelve miles southwest of Hillsboro. The 2020 Census counted 101 residents and 40 housing units, every one occupied, on 0.282 square miles of land, and by July 1, 2025 the Census Bureau estimated 115 people.
Permits: the City inside, the county outside
Aquilla is a General Law city, according to the Texas Municipal League. The City's website gives its office as 201 Treadwell but has no page for permits, ordinances or fees. No published rule is not the same as no rule, so check with the City before a job is booked.
Hill County's rules apply around the city, on land outside its limits, not inside them: a 2025 policy on driveway culverts in unincorporated areas and the extraterritorial jurisdiction of cities, and a Development Permit for new addresses and floodplain questions.
What the soil survey maps
The Hill County soil survey maps Burleson clay on 0 to 1 percent slopes at the Census Bureau's centre point for Aquilla and rates it "Somewhat limited" for concrete driveways and sidewalks and for houses on a concrete slab, for high shrink-swell. That is one point, so each lot's ground gets its own look at the estimate.
The association places the Eagleford formation between Abbott and Aquilla. Abbott, the 1881 railroad town half a mile east of Interstate 35, has its own concrete page. In McLennan County, West stands on Interstate 35 eighty miles south of Dallas; see concrete work in West.
