From Bould Springs to the 1881 townsite
The Texas State Historical Association traces West to a settlement at Bould (or Bold) Springs, begun by Carey Boulds before 1852, and the 1860 census recorded 311 people there. The present townsite was laid out in 1881 and named for Thomas M. West, the year the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad built through, and the town incorporated in June 1892. By 1900, the association says, the railroad and available university lands had begun to bring large numbers of Czechs and Germans, and Westfest, held every Labor Day weekend, draws around 50,000 people.
The Census Bureau's estimate for July 1, 2025 is 2,629 residents, against a 2,557 base for April 2020, living on 1.707 square miles of land with no water area. West ISD, founded in 1892, also serves Leroy, Tours, Gerald and Ross in northern McLennan County.
Ground and permits
In the association's picture of McLennan County, flat to rolling land spans both the Grand Prairie and the Blackland Prairie, and the Balcones Fault cuts across it from southwest to northeast. The county's "western section" has shallow, stony soils; to the east the ground turns low rolling to flat, with black, waxy soils of clay and sand loams. West lies in the northeastern part of the county.
The City of West takes building permit applications through an online citizen portal, and questions go to its Code Enforcement & Building Permits contact, the code official. Our research found no posted rule on which drives, walks, patios or slabs need a permit, no fee and no adopted code edition, so ask the City before work is scheduled; a missing answer is no sign that a permit isn't needed.
Leroy, where Farm Roads 308 and 2311 cross northeast of Waco, had its school consolidated into West ISD in 1948, and its own page covers concrete jobs in Leroy. Abbott, in Hill County, sits a half mile east of Interstate 35 and began in 1881 as a railroad town on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas line; see Abbott concrete services.
