Driveway thickness, base and curing

About 67% of Bellmead's housing units, 2,554 of 3,800, are single-family detached houses (Census Bureau, 2020–2024), and a drive for any of them is built around its heaviest vehicle.

The Michigan Concrete Association's guidelines, written for a freeze-thaw climate, call for 4,000 psi concrete at 28 days, 4 inches minimum or 5 with delivery vehicles, and at least 4 inches of compacted sub-base; unstable soil comes out at least 6 inches deep and is refilled with crushed stone, gravel or sand compacted to 95%. They let traffic onto a drive after 7 days of curing, or before that once a test shows 2,500 psi.

Asphalt drives have a service life of about 15 years; a concrete one, properly installed and maintained, should last 30 years or longer. For a patterned surface, see a stamped or colored finish; for the path to the door, the front walk; and for anything else, Bellmead concrete services.

Three steps to a new drive

  1. Measure and choose the thickness

Length, width and the heaviest vehicle set the slab, from the 4-inch minimum for cars to more for delivery trucks.

  2. Dig out and build the base

Soft or unstable soil is removed and replaced, the sub-base is compacted, and the forms and steel go in.

  3. Pour, saw and cure

Joints are sawed in the window of about 8 to 12 hours after the pour, and the drive cures before the car goes on it.

Driveway building questions

How thick should the edges of a driveway be?

Thicker than the middle. The edges carry the heaviest loads and have less soil support, so an extra 1 to 2 inches of depth along a band 4 to 8 inches wide at the perimeter helps; one published guide puts the edges at 6 to 8 inches to prevent cracking.

Is there a City fee where a new drive meets a Bellmead street?

Bellmead's Master Fee Schedule lists $50 among its public right-of-way permits for driveway, sidewalk, curb or street construction. The schedule is undated and also carries a residential Concrete Flatwork line, so ask Community Development which one applies before any concrete is broken out.

How wet should driveway concrete be when it arrives?

Stiff enough for a slump of about 4 inches. The Portland Cement Association warns against slumps greater than 5 inches for driveway paving, and a water-cement ratio below 0.50 is advised as well.
