How color and pattern go into fresh concrete
A stamped slab is poured like any other, then colored and printed before it hardens. Release agent stops the mats from sticking and leaves a faint second color behind: roughly 70% to 80% of it rinses off after the concrete hardens, and the part left in the texture becomes the antique accent. At the right moment, workers press the mats in by walking on them, perhaps with light tamping, laying the first row along a straight line.
Freezes are the winter risk. National Weather Service records for Waco put the latest freeze on April 15 (in 2014 and 1983) and the earliest on October 24, 1917, and the January–February 2023 ice event kept the city at or below freezing for 84 straight hours. For freeze-thaw resistance, one color-hardener maker, Butterfield Color, calls for at least 6 sacks of cement per cubic yard.
The same patterns suit patio slabs in China Spring and a patterned front walk; other jobs are on our China Spring page.

Pattern and colors
Pick the pattern, a base color and a release color for the accent.
Color, then press
The first shake of color hardener sits five to 10 minutes, drawing water from the concrete, before it's floated in; then the mats go down.
Wash off and seal
At least 75% of powdered release must come off before sealing, and once a color-hardened surface is sealed, Brickform's sheet asks for a day without foot traffic and five days without vehicles.

Questions before you stamp
Is it safe to pour stamped concrete right before a hard freeze?
It's a risk. Fresh concrete freezes below about 25°F, and freezing can cut its potential strength by more than 50%, so the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association wants it kept protected until it hits 500 psi, which takes about two days. Scaling on stamped work usually traces to placing or curing it in freezing temperatures, or to improper finishing.
How much color hardener goes on a stamped slab?
Brickform's technical sheet calls for 60 pounds per 120 square feet on most jobs and Butterfield Color's for 50 pounds per 100; both call for more on lighter colors.
Can a stamped surface that feels too rough be softened?
Somewhat: low-solids acrylic sealer, put on in a couple of light coats, can soften a stamped texture that came out too rough.
