Thickness, joints and color in a stamped slab
One published guide's minimum for a patio is 4 inches, rising to 5 or 6 under something heavy, a hot tub or an outdoor fireplace for example; a stamped drive is sized like any other drive, as the questions below explain.
Joints still matter under a pattern: in stamped concrete they are cut to at least one-fourth of the slab's depth. Makers differ on the color layer: Brickform specifies 60 pounds of color hardener per 120 square feet for most jobs, Butterfield Color 50 pounds per 100 square feet, and both ask for more on lighter colors.
Under it all, Butterfield Color's data sheet recommends at least 4 inches of compacted gravel and a slump of 4 inches or less. Freezes matter too, as the cement question below explains: in the 1991–2020 normals, 34.1 days a year at Waco Regional Airport have a low of 32°F or colder. Gravel and forms
Gravel is compacted under the slab, and forms set its thickness and fall.
Color and pattern
Concrete is placed, color hardener is worked into the surface, and the pattern is pressed while the slab is still workable.
Cut, rinse, seal
Control joints are sawn, the leftover release is rinsed away, and the sealer waits until the slab has cured.

Stamped slab build questions
How thick should a stamped driveway be?
As thick as a plain drive carrying the same vehicles. One published guide finds 4 inches generally enough where the heaviest vehicle is a car or SUV, while trucks and big RVs, which can top 12,000 pounds, may need 5 or 6; it adds that many municipalities want the apron at the street 5 or 6 inches thick.
Does stamped concrete need more cement where it freezes?
One color-hardener maker says so. Butterfield Color's sheet asks for no less than 5 sacks of cement in each cubic yard, and 6 in exterior concrete that has to resist freezing and thawing. Brickform's sheet sets its own floor at 5½ sacks.
Does a stamped patio need rebar?
Not always. One published guide wants rebar or welded wire fabric once a slab is more than 5 inches deep, above all under heavy loads, but calls reinforcement unnecessary for many slabs on a well-compacted subbase with joints at the right spacing. NRMCA adds that "wire mesh will not prevent cracking" and that it tends to hold cracks and joints closed.
