Where the town sits and what it's built on

The Texas State Historical Association puts Mart eighteen miles east of Waco, in the eastern corner of McLennan County. Settlement began soon after the Civil War; the community was called Willow Springs in the 1870s and took the name Mart when a post office was granted in 1880. In 1901 residents voted to incorporate, with a mayor-council government. The association's counts peak at 3,105 residents in 1920 and show 2,004 in 1990 and 2,273 in 2000.

The 2020 Census counted 1,748 people. For July 1, 2025 the Census Bureau estimates 1,847 and places them in two counties: 1,840 in McLennan and 7 in Limestone. The city covers 1.377 square miles of land and no water area.

Mart is on the Blackland Prairie side of McLennan County. Our soil facts for it are county-wide rather than street by street, so the ground at each address is looked at during the estimate.

The City of Mart's website lists a Code Compliance Department for tall grass, weeds, brush and abandoned structures, but we found no building-permit page there. That gap settles nothing either way, so ask the City before a drive, slab or walk is poured or replaced.
