Color, accent and sealer for a stamped slab

The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 survey estimates count 2,024 of McGregor's 2,442 housing units as single-family detached houses, and they put the median value of owner-occupied homes at $221,700.

Brickform's data sheet splits color hardener into two applications: roughly 75–80% goes down first, the other 20–25% after. Butterfield Color says its hardener "greatly increases the strength and durability of the concrete surface." The accent from the release should stay a minor share: one published guide puts it at 5% to 30% of the final color and warns that too much can hurt sealer adhesion.

A plain broom-finished slab is on patio work in McGregor, resealing older stamped work on the resurfacing page, and other McGregor jobs are listed together.

Pick, press, wash, seal

  1. Choose pattern and color

Pattern, base color and accent are chosen, and the slab is sized and sloped for its spot.

  2. Color, then stamp

Hardener goes down in two passes, release follows, and the stamping mats go on before the slab stiffens.

  3. Wash-down and final coat

Most of the release is washed off, and the final sealer goes on weeks later, after a light surface cleaning.

Staining, color and cost

What are the downsides of staining concrete?

A few. Stain simply washes away if the surface pores aren't opened first, and patched or repaired areas take the color differently. Brickform warns that its acid stain won't hide discoloration, blemishes or cracks, that power-troweled or very dense concrete may not react well without profiling, and that residue left on the surface leads to sealer adhesion and durability problems. Acid stains also come mostly in a limited range of earth tones.

Will a colored stamped slab come out one even shade?

Not perfectly. As one trade article puts it, "Concrete is a natural material and subject to mottling and color variation whether pigmented or not." Pigment has a ceiling too: the ASTM standard for concrete pigments limits dosage to 10 percent, and most high-quality pigments reach saturation at about 5 or 6 pounds per sack of cementitious material.

Does a stained slab cost less than a stamped one?

Not by much in national figures for 2025: a stained concrete driveway runs $8 to $25 a square foot and a stamped one $8 to $26, both including pouring the slab.
