A railroad town on clay and limestone

The Texas State Historical Association places McGregor, first known as McGregor Springs, sixteen miles southwest of Waco on U.S. Highway 84 in western McLennan County. It was established in 1882 where the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe and the Texas and St. Louis railways crossed, and on September 7 of that year a state land commissioner sold town lots at auction from the back of a railroad flatcar. In 1942 the Army announced the Bluebonnet Ordnance Plant on 18,000 acres just southwest of town; the population tripled in three months to more than 6,000, then fell back to about 2,000 after the war.

Today the Census Bureau estimates 6,405 residents (July 1, 2025), up from 5,394 in its April 2020 estimates base, on 23.111 square miles of land. The city reaches into Coryell County, but the estimates count no residents in that part.

The 1992 county soil survey places the city in its Crawford-Purves unit: nearly level and gently sloping, shallow and moderately deep clayey soils over fractured limestone of the Main Street Limestone formation. Each service page below explains what that ground means for its kind of job.

Permits go through the City's Community Development department at 302 S Madison St, with forms on the City Forms page, and fees follow Ordinance O-17-2025, adopted September 8, 2025 and in effect since October 1, 2025. The schedule doesn't say which concrete jobs its flat work line covers, so ask Community Development before work begins.

The City also points visitors to an Amtrak stop, the Exchange Event Center, the McGinley Memorial Public Library and nearby Mother Neff State Park, which carries a Moody address on the Leon River. Ten miles from McGregor, Moody sits where State Highway 317 meets Farm Road 107, and our Moody concrete page covers that city. The Texas and St. Louis Railway, one of McGregor's two founding lines, also laid a narrow-gauge track from Waco to Gatesville in 1882, and the railroads' arrival prompted the founding of Oglesby in eastern Coryell County, where concrete work in Oglesby has its own page.
