Concrete Patios in Moody, TX

Concrete patios in Moody, TX from Waco Elite Concrete are planned around the faults behind most cracked slabs, such as missing joints, a poorly prepared base, watered-down concrete and too little curing, and the estimate is free.

Why old patios crack, and how a new one avoids it

Owners live in 392 of Moody's 511 occupied homes, about 77%, by the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 estimates (wide margins).

NRMCA blames most cracking on design and construction errors: joints left out or badly placed, a poorly prepared subgrade, concrete too wet or high in slump, poor finishing, fast drying, and curing that was cut short or skipped. Its panel rule for flatwork such as a patio: square or close to it, with the long side never more than 1.5 times the short side, and no L-shapes.

When a patio slopes the wrong way

A slab pitched toward the house usually has to be removed and replaced, one published guide says, while one that sank because its base eroded can sometimes be raised back to slope by slabjacking, often a good fix for patios; see concrete leveling in Moody. The rest of the work we price here is on Moody's concrete page.

Break out, rebuild, cure

  1. Look at the old slab

Its slope, joints and base are checked, so the new patio doesn't repeat what failed.

  2. Base, forms and joints

The base is compacted, the forms set to fall away from the house, and the joints laid out in near-square panels.

  3. Pour, cure, then seal

Ohio Concrete's industry recommendation cures the slab for a week or longer and holds the sealer back until it is 30 days old.

Old patio, new patio: questions

Should a cracked patio be patched or replaced?

It depends on the damage. A lightly or moderately scaled surface can be renewed with a thin bonded resurfacing over sound, cleaned concrete, NRMCA notes, though the repair won't match the original color. If the cracks are wide and jagged and the slab has heaved or settled, replacing it may be the answer.

How thick is the base under a patio?

At least 4 inches, counting subbase and base together, by one published guide's measure. The ACI 302 guide it cites wants a compactable granular base whose fines make up 10 to 30%, with clay, silt and organic material kept out.

Can a patio be poured in July heat?

Yes, with care. Concrete cures best between 50°F and 80°F, one published guide says, and in hot weather NRMCA advises adding no water to concrete more than 1½ hours old and curing for at least 3 days. Waco's normal daily high in July is 96.7°F (1991–2020 normals).
