Width, base and joints for a new walk
Where the walk runs beside a house, it slopes away from the wall: one published guide drops a 4-foot walk 1 inch across its width. Joints are cut across it about every 4 feet, roughly a quarter of the way through, and the top gets a broom texture so it isn't slick.
A walk along a street is a different question. Allen Street, for one, carries Farm Road 339 south from Highway 31, and no Mount Calm rule for walks beside a street was found, so ask the City before forms go in along any frontage.
A walk often ends at a patio slab, and a sunken one can sometimes be raised instead of replaced, through lifting a sunken walk; the rest of our Mount Calm work is on the town page.

Mark the line and width
The line, width and fall are marked, keeping two walk-widths between the edge and any tree where the yard allows.
Dig the bed, lay the stone
Sod and soil come out to about 8 inches, and the bottom 4 inches are filled with compacted gravel or crushed stone.
Concrete, joints, broom texture
Four inches of concrete go in, the joints are cut, and the surface is broomed and cured.

(254) 309-9254What a walk costs: highway bids and base work
The ticket shows average low bids for sidewalks on state highway contracts in the Waco highway district, which takes in Hill County (December 31, 2016 series): public-job prices, not retail quotes. Base and grading add to a home walk: a typical Central Texas figure (2026) is $1 to $2 a square foot to grade and $1 to $4 for gravel or sand. These are averages, not our prices.

Ground, plastic and width questions
Is the clay loam at Mount Calm's centre point hard on a walk?
It's a clay soil, and the base under a walk matters. In NRCS's Hill County data for the Wilson soil mapped there, the top 19 centimetres are 31 percent clay and have a linear extensibility of 2.8 percent, the agency's gauge of shrink-swell. Its rating note says the shrink-swell feature "limits the performance and longevity of concrete structures and applications".
Does a new walk need plastic under it?
Usually not. NRMCA finds vapor retarders generally unnecessary under outdoor slabs on grade and recommends them beneath interior floors. Where one is added anyway, a typical Central Texas figure (2026) is $0.50 to $0.70 a square foot.
Is a walk under 3 feet wide too narrow?
One published planning guide calls walkways under 3 feet "duck walks" and suggests garden paths 4 to 5 feet wide; another puts the ideal sidewalk at 48 inches, wide enough for a wheelchair or two people side by side.
