Raising a dropped step, walk or drive panel

The grout pumped in slabjacking starts with portland cement and water, then takes limestone dust, fly ash or sand in some combination, along with additives. Foam is the light option: Alchatek, which makes polyurethane lifting foam, puts a cubic foot of it at 2 to 4 pounds where mudjacking material can reach 100. The same maker says foam gains 90% of its strength in about 15 minutes, where mudjacking grout can take as much as two days.

In Waco's 1991–2020 normals, the wettest month is May, with 4.44 inches, and the driest is July, with 1.82. The USDA describes Houston Black clay as taking in water quickly when it is dry and cracked, and very slowly when it is moist.

Where the concrete itself is broken, Riesel crack repair may fit better, and a drive past saving is covered under new driveways in Riesel; see the other Riesel services too.

Lifting a panel in three moves

  1. Measure and trace the drop

How far each panel sank is measured, and the cause, from washed-out fill to a leaking pipe, is looked for first.

  2. Drill ports, pump fill

A few small holes go through the panel, and fill is pumped under it until it rises to the line of its neighbors.

  3. Plug, patch, re-check fall

The ports are filled and patched, and the slope is checked so water still runs away from the house.

Sunken concrete questions

Why do slabs on Blackland clay drop during dry spells?

Houston Black, a Blackland Prairie clay, is high in smectite, which swells when wet and shrinks when dry. USDA's description has its dry-season cracks ½ to 4 inches wide, reaching 12 inches deep or more and staying open 90 to 150 days in most years. One published guide puts poorly compacted fill first among the causes of sinking slabs, with erosion underneath and shrinking soil also possible.

What has to be fixed before a slab is lifted?

Whatever made it sink, where that can be found. Roots under the slab or a leaking pipe washing out the ground can leave replacement as the only choice, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors says mudjacking isn't appropriate while the reason for the settling goes unaddressed.

How is slab lifting priced?

By the square foot, with a minimum. For a driveway, national figures run $3 to $6 per square foot for lifting or mudjacking against $6 to $15 for replacement, and minimum service fees of $100 to $250 apply (2025).
