A railroad town southeast of Waco

The Texas State Historical Association puts Riesel on the Missouri Pacific Railroad fourteen miles southeast of Waco, in southeastern McLennan County. The Houston and Texas Central Railway built a stop called Roddy here around 1880, and a post office named Prospect opened in 1890; in 1891 the post office and the community were renamed for W. H. Riesel, who had built a gin there the year before. The City's logo still reads "Established 1890 Our Roots Run Deep", and in 1938 the Texas Department of Agriculture set up an experimental station just east of town.

The association counts 973 residents in 2000 and 1,007 in 2010. The 2020 Census found 1,062; for July 1, 2025, the Census Bureau's estimate is 1,061, on 4.164 square miles of land.

Clay country and the City's five steps

Texas Parks and Wildlife says part of the Blackland Prairie, the region of black, calcareous, alkaline, heavy clay soils, reaches into the eastern part of McLennan County. Riesel's own soil map unit isn't in our sources, so the ground at each lot is looked at during the estimate.

The City of Riesel publishes five steps for anyone who plans to build or develop: a utilities review, platting where it's needed, a residential or commercial building permit application, inspections as the work goes on, and water and sewer tap fees. We found no list of which concrete jobs need a permit and no fee table. That gap is in what's published, not a sign that no permit is required, so ask the City before forming anything.
