Slab work over Bosque County limestone

About 90% of Valley Mills' 491 housing units are single-family detached houses, in the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 survey estimates, so slab work here runs from house foundations and additions to garages, carports and shop floors.

The Texas State Historical Association describes Bosque County's land as mostly soils underlain by limestone. Across the county line, McLennan County's 2001 soil survey says limestone bedrock makes a good base for houses and roads but is commonly difficult to dig into, so where rock sits close to the surface, the footing and trench digging is planned before the price is set.

The International Residential Code wants the fill beneath a slab compacted, and without special approval it may run no deeper than 24 inches if it is clean sand or gravel, or 8 inches if it is earth. Steel earns its place because concrete resists pulling only about 15% as well as it resists crushing, one published guide explains.

A drive out to the new garage is a separate job (Valley Mills driveways), and other concrete work in Valley Mills is on the town page.

Slab questions: metal buildings, bases and steel

What is the average cost of a metal building with a concrete slab?

Our price sources cover the concrete, not the steel building. For the slab, national figures for 2026 give $4 to $8 a square foot, or $6 at 6 inches thick, plus a vapor barrier at $0.50, thickened edges at $1 to $2 and rebar at $2 to $3 a square foot. The building is priced separately.

Does a slab set below grade need a gravel base?

Under the 2015 International Residential Code, yes. A floor slab on the ground is at least 3½ inches thick and, below grade, sits on a 4-inch base course of clean graded sand, gravel, crushed stone or crushed concrete.

At what thickness does a slab need rebar or wire?

Past 5 inches deep, one published guide's rule of thumb calls for rebar or welded wire fabric, all the more where loads are heavy; on a well-compacted base with joints at the right spacing, many slabs need no steel at all. Where steel is used, the code has it supported from mid-depth to the top third of the slab while the concrete goes in.
