Base, fall and mix under a stamped finish

Soil that drains well is one thing; rain on top of a patterned slab is another. Water lingers in the imprints, so a stamped surface sheds it more slowly than a smooth one, and the slab needs a deliberate fall: a common rule for exterior slabs is at least 2%, a ¼-inch drop for every foot of length.

The mix follows the color-hardener maker. Butterfield Color's sheet sets a floor of 5 sacks of cement a cubic yard and a slump no higher than 4 inches. Brickform's asks for 5½ sacks, the same 4-inch slump limit and no calcium chloride accelerators.

Brickform's sheet has its hardener spread in two rounds, 75–80% of it first and the remaining 20–25% second, and Butterfield credits color hardener with a much stronger, more durable surface.

A stamped patio (Valley Mills patios) or a patterned drive (concrete driveways in Valley Mills) starts as a plain slab; see every Valley Mills service for the rest.

From gravel base to second sealer coat

  1. Grade and choose

The base is compacted and graded for fall, and the pattern and colors are picked.

  2. Harden, imprint, touch up

Color hardener goes on in two passes, the mats are pressed in, and the imprint is touched up by hand where needed.

  3. Rinse, cure, seal twice

Leftover release is rinsed away, and after curing the slab takes two thin coats of acrylic sealer.

Stamped and decorative finish questions

What is the best finish for interior concrete floors?

It depends on the traffic the room gets. Polishing is one route: the Concrete Polishing Council grades the look in four levels, from Level 1, ground and flat, to Level 4, highly polished with a near-mirror reflection. A stained floor indoors is protected with a good floor wax, one published guide says, and among sealers, polyurethanes suit high-traffic floors that need to resist scuffs and stains, while acrylics fit jobs where easy application and economy matter.

Does stamped concrete need a gravel base?

Butterfield Color's data sheet recommends one: a carefully prepared, compacted subgrade with at least 4 inches of approved gravel fill under the slab.

How long should stamped concrete cure before it is sealed?

The guides differ. One says to wait until the slab has cured for at least 28 days before its first sealing. Brickform's guide puts a cure-and-seal on at once and saves the final sealer for when the concrete has cured, which it puts at about 28 days.
