A drive on clay rated very limited
Heiden clay, a soil the 1992 county survey described in West, is rated "Very limited" for concrete driveways and sidewalks in the USDA soil survey of McLennan County, for high shrink-swell, and Houston Black and several other county clays share that rating. In NRCS terms, poor performance and high upkeep can be expected unless the limits are overcome, which generally takes major reclamation, special design or expensive installation. The rating describes the soil, not any one lot.
Where soils expand, one published guide wants 2 to 8 inches of crushed rock as subgrade, more as the swelling gets worse, with soft spots dug out and refilled. Where a new lane meets an old drive, the American Concrete Pavement Association puts an isolation joint between old and new pavement, ½ to 1 inch wide and filled full depth with pre-formed filler.
A patterned finish is covered under stamped concrete for West drives, and a panel that has only sunk may suit slab lifting instead; our West services lists the rest.

(254) 309-9254Base, steel and concrete, in order
Break out or clear
The old drive is broken out and hauled off, or the new route cleared, and soft spots are dug out and filled with good material.
Rock and reinforcement
Crushed rock is spread and compacted, and rebar or mesh is set on blocks so it stays centered in the slab.
Pour and wait
About seven days after placement a drive has roughly 70% of its potential strength and can take the car; RVs and large trucks wait at least 28 days.

National figures for 2025 put a concrete driveway at $1,885 to $6,475 in all, with $3,500 as the average, and say two more inches of thickness raise the cost about 25%. These are averages, not our prices.

Steel, sealer and the first winter
Why do builders add steel rods inside concrete?
Because concrete pulls apart far more easily than it crushes: one published guide puts its tensile strength at only about 15% of its compressive strength. Steel supplies what's missing against settlement, heavy loads, shrinkage and temperature swings, but only when it sits at or just above the middle of the slab. NRMCA adds that it can't prevent cracking, though placed right it can keep cracks narrower.
When can a new concrete driveway first be sealed?
The Michigan Concrete Association's guidance puts a penetrating sealer on 30 days after the pour and expects to reapply it every three to five years.
Should deicers be used on a new driveway?
Not in its first winter, one published maintenance guide advises. After that, it suggests resealing about every two years, or when the finish starts to show wear.
