Mix, color and detailing

Owner-occupied homes in Willow Grove have a median value of $269,600, give or take $30,213, in the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 survey estimates. Whatever the house, a stamped slab is built the same way.

It starts with the mix. Butterfield Color's color-hardener sheet asks for "a minimum of 5-sacks of cement per cubic yard", 6 sacks where freeze-thaw resistance matters, poured "at a 4-inch (100 mm) slump or less". Brickform splits its hardener into two applications: 75 to 80% first, the remaining 20 to 25% after.

Pressing the pattern is only part of the finish. Detailing follows the stamps: a hand chisel, roller or texture skin takes off the cement paste the mats pushed aside, and the control joints still go in, at least one-fourth of the slab's thickness deep.

A patterned drive is covered on the driveway page, a plain or stamped backyard slab on patios in Willow Grove, and every Willow Grove service is listed together.

Stamping in three stages

  1. Base and pour

A compacted gravel fill of 4 inches or more goes down first, then the slab is placed.

  2. Color and press

Each first shake of hardener gets five to 10 minutes to pull water from the concrete before it is floated in. The first row of stamps is set on a straight line, and at the right stage the mats press in under a person's weight.

  3. Rinse, cure and seal

Curing compound has to wait for the release rinse, which comes a day after stamping at the earliest, sometimes two or three.

Stamped concrete cost

For stamped patios, national figures for 2025 run $8 to $12 a square foot for basic designs, $12 to $18 for mid-range and $18 to $30 at the high end, with a 200-square-foot patio at $2,400 to $3,600; labor alone can be $6 to $25 a square foot. These are averages, not our prices.

Questions about stamped finishes

Why does the release have to come off before stamped concrete is sealed?

Too much release left behind spoils the sealer, and the American Society of Concrete Contractors' sealer guide labels it "one of the biggest reported sealer problems". With powdered release, "75% or more" has to come off first, and the guide's recommended cleaner is 1 part muriatic acid in 15 to 20 parts water.

How much color hardener does a stamped slab take?

It depends on the maker and the color. Brickform's rate is 60 pounds of hardener for every 120 square feet on most jobs, rising to 60 pounds per 90 square feet for light colors; Butterfield Color gives 50 pounds per 100 square feet, or about 50 per 80 for lighter shades.

How soon can you walk or drive on color-hardened stamped concrete?

Once the color-hardened surface is sealed, Brickform's sheet says to "protect the surface from foot traffic for 24 hours and vehicular traffic for 5 days."
