Will your concrete floor polish well?
That depends on the slab already there. The Concrete Polishing Council of the American Society of Concrete Contractors says mock-ups belong on the actual slab, because aggregate type and size change the final color. On older floors, delamination typically breaks off surface layers ⅛ to ¼ inch thick, and where it is extensive, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association says grinding and overlaying a new surface may be needed.
Sheen levels and stone exposure
The council grades shine by image clarity (DOI) from 0 to 100, in four levels from Ground (0 to 9) through Honed and Polished to Highly Polished (over 70), a near-mirror look that may require grouting. The stone showing runs from Class A, a cream finish, through Class B, salt and pepper, to Class C, full aggregate exposure.

Densify
A chemical hardener goes on next, mainly a sodium, potassium or lithium silicate or a newer colloidal type.
Polish and measure
Resin-bond diamonds follow at 100/200, 400 and 800 grit, with a 1500- or 3000-grit finish for the sheen chosen. The council asks for three or more readings on up to 1,000 square feet, plus one per further 1,000.

You get the slab you have. The type and size of its stone change the final color, so a test on the actual floor comes first; the Level 4 shine may require grouting; and every step up in gloss means more grinding and a higher price.
What does a concrete densifier do?
According to the maker Prosoco, a silicate densifier turns the calcium hydroxide in the slab into calcium silicate hydrate, the hard compound that holds concrete together. Contractors credit densifiers with less dusting, higher gloss readings and more abrasion resistance.
