From Tonk Crossing to the Western White House

Settlement began in the 1850s at Tonk Crossing, also called Crawford Crossing, a ford of the Middle Bosque River two miles east of today's town, and the community was probably named for Nelson Crawford, who graded that crossing. A post office followed in 1871. In 1881 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway laid its Temple to Fort Worth track two miles west, and on August 12, 1897 residents voted to incorporate, fifty-one to forty-two. The Texas State Historical Association adds that in 2000 the town gained fame as the site of President George W. Bush's "Western White House".

The association puts Crawford eighteen miles west of Waco in western McLennan County. The Census Bureau's estimate for July 1, 2025 is 934 people, against a base of 886 in April 2020, living on 1.441 square miles of land, and the Crawford Independent School District serves the town.

The ground is different on this side of the county. The association describes the county's western section, the Grand Prairie side, as varied terrain under shallow, stony soils that support mountain cedar and oak, where the eastern section has black, waxy clays. Several of the service pages below say what that means for the job.

Inside the city limits, construction permits and inspections run through the City's contract with Bureau Veritas, and applications go to the City Secretary by email. Beyond the limits, residents of the extraterritorial jurisdiction voted on November 4, 2025 on creating a Municipal Development District, which the City said would fund "road improvements and infrastructure development projects"; we haven't found the result.

Valley Mills, on State Highway 6 near the Bosque River in southwestern Bosque County, sits in a county whose land is mostly soils underlain by limestone; see concrete work in Valley Mills. China Spring, on Farm Road 1637 northwest of Waco, is unincorporated, so McLennan County's building rule applies there, as our China Spring concrete page explains.
