Shop walks, public walks and front paths

As the county seat, Marlin holds the courthouse; the present one went up in 1938–39, after the 1887 building was declared unsafe. A walk built or altered at a government building, a store or an office comes under the 2010 ADA Standards: a level change up to ¼ inch may stay vertical, one of ¼ to ½ inch must be beveled no steeper than 1:2, anything higher has to be ramped, and the surface must be stable, firm and slip resistant.

At a house, general practice applies. Beside the house, a 4-foot walk is sloped away from the wall, 1 inch over its width, and trees are best kept two walk-widths from its edge, since big roots can lift a slab.

A walk that has only sunk may need slab leveling; where it meets the drive, see Marlin driveways, and our Marlin page for all ten services.

Staking, digging and pouring a walk

  1. Stake the line

The route is staked from the door to the drive or street, with room kept between the walk and any tree.

  2. Dig for the base

About 8 inches of sod and soil come out: space for 4 inches of compacted gravel or crushed stone, then 4 inches of concrete.

  3. Cut the joints

Grooves for control joints go across the walk at roughly 4-foot spacing, each about a quarter as deep as the slab.

Sidewalk questions, public and private

Do the ADA rules apply to the walk at my house?

Not as a rule. The U.S. Access Board says ADA standards "apply to places of public accommodation, commercial facilities, and state and local government facilities in new construction, alterations, and additions." Even where a business runs from a home, the part used only as a residence isn't covered.

How much can a public walk slope sideways?

No steeper than 1:48 across, under the 2010 ADA Standards. Lengthwise the limit is 1:20, and the walk must give at least 36 inches of clear width.

How narrow is too narrow for a front walk?

Walkways under 3 feet wide are best avoided, and paths feel more generous at 4 to 5 feet. For a front walk, 48 inches is the ideal width, enough for a wheelchair or two people walking side by side, at a thickness of at least 4 inches.
