A county seat where two state highways cross
The Texas State Historical Association puts Marlin at the intersection of State Highways 6 and 7, four miles east of the Brazos River near the center of Falls County. The town stands on the site of Sarahville de Viesca, established in 1834 by Sterling Clack Robertson on the west side of the falls of the Brazos, and it was named for John Marlin, a pioneer patriot. The City still calls itself the "Home of the Falls on the Brazos River".
The association dates incorporation to 1867; the City's own history says 1866. Rail arrived in 1871 with the Houston and Texas Central, and the population tripled from 500 to 1,500 within a decade. After hot mineral water turned up in 1892 during the search for an artesian well, the town geared its economy to the health industry for fifty years. In 1901 the International-Great Northern dredged the lake in what became the City Park, still a site for Marlin Festival Days. The Census Bureau puts the population at 5,599 on July 1, 2025, from an April 2020 base of 5,451, all of it in Falls County.
Prairie ground, checked at each job
Falls County covers 765 square miles of the Blackland Prairie, and the Brazos River cuts it in two; the association names Marlin as its largest town, 24 miles south of Waco. No soil survey for Falls County is among our sources, so the ground under a given drive, slab or patio is looked at during the estimate.
Permits from the City's own department
Inside the city limits, the Permit & Inspection Department issues permits for building, remodeling, additions and demolition, and for moving houses, structures and mobile homes. It keeps weekday hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed for lunch from noon to 1. Its page states no rule for drives, walks, patios or other flatwork, and silence there is no proof that none applies, so ask the department before work starts.
Twelve miles west on State Highway 7, in the northwestern part of the county, Chilton has its own concrete page. Over the county line, Mart sits eighteen miles east of Waco on State Highway 164, in the eastern corner of McLennan County; see concrete services for Mart.
