A store, a post office and the 1888 railroad

Five families from Missouri were the first to settle around Chilton, in 1854, according to the Texas State Historical Association. Lysias B. Chilton opened a store close by in 1876, and the post office that followed in 1882 took his name. Then, in 1888, the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway came through the county; the town shifted to be nearer the tracks, and the Texas Townsite Company gave it the official name Chilton.

The association sets the community in northwestern Falls County, along State Highway 7 a mile from U.S. Highway 77, with Marlin twelve miles to the east and Waco twenty-one miles to the north.

Two population figures describe two different areas. The association counted 310 people in the village in 1990 and 274 in 2000. The Census Bureau's census-designated place is far larger, 3.951 square miles of land, and it held 776 residents and 287 housing units (244 occupied, 43 vacant) in the 2020 Census. Being unincorporated, it gets no yearly population estimate.

No city hall, so ask Falls County

No city issues permits in Chilton, because it isn't incorporated. We looked for the county's own rules and found nothing to cite: Falls County's website has no building-permit, floodplain or development page, and its Road & Bridge page is about road and bridge maintenance. A missing web page is not a ruling that a job needs no permit, so check with Falls County before any work is booked.

Prairie clay and loam

Falls County lies in the Blackland Prairie region, the association says. Upland clayey and loamy soil covers more than 70 percent of it, and deep loamy or sandy-and-loamy soil the remainder. Our sources don't map the ground under any single Chilton lot, so each estimate starts there.

Marlin, the county seat, runs a City Permit & Inspection Department of its own; concrete work in Marlin has the details. Golinda, where stagecoaches between Marlin and Waco once stopped, straddles the Falls–McLennan county line on U.S. Highway 77: see Golinda's concrete services.
