A small city on Interstate 35 with its own permit list

Lorena sits on Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 81, thirteen miles southwest of Waco in southern McLennan County, by the Texas State Historical Association's account. Its townsite dates from 1881, when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas line was going in between Hillsboro and Taylor, and the town took its name from Lorena Westbrook, whose family was prominent locally. Building the interstate along U.S. 81 in the late 1950s and early 1960s boosted the local economy. Lorena incorporated in 1959 and began to grow, as some Waco families moved there for smaller-town living and a commute to work in the city.

The Census Bureau's estimate for July 1, 2025 is 1,817 residents, up from an April 2020 base of 1,780. The City calls Lorena "a nice family-oriented community". Lorena ISD, headquartered at 308 North Frontage Road, has approximately 1,750 students from PreK through grade 12 on four campuses, and Midway ISD counts parts of Lorena inside its district as well.

Ground conditions vary across the county. In McLennan County's 1992 soil survey, the clayey upland group "makes up about 26 percent of McLennan County", most of it with a high shrink-swell potential, so the ground under each job gets its own look before anything is priced.
