Hilltop on Farm Road 1996
The Texas State Historical Association puts Oglesby at the crossing of Farm Road 1996 and the St. Louis Southwestern Railway of Texas, thirteen miles east of Gatesville in eastern Coryell County. The settlement dates from 1882, the year the railroad came through. It was called Hilltop at first, for its spot on the highest point above sea level along the line, then renamed for William Oglesby, who gave land for the townsite. It incorporated in 1953.
The 2020 Census found 441 residents and 203 housing units on 0.511 square miles of land, and the Census Bureau's estimate for July 1, 2025 is 445. By our own straight-line measure, the town is 21.3 miles from Waco.
Permits inside and outside the city
In the Texas Municipal League's directory, Oglesby is a General Law Type B city at 120 Main St., and its council meets on the third Tuesday at 6 p.m. Our research turned up no website for the City, and no permit list, fee schedule or adopted building code. A rule that isn't published can still exist, so ask the City what a job needs before the forms go down. Beyond the city limits, Coryell County's Development and Permitting Department handles culvert and driveway permits on county right of way.
Limestone under clay
By the association's account, Coryell County is plateaus and grassland in the Grand Prairie region, and its soils vary widely, though most are alkaline with limestone underneath. At the Census Bureau's centre point for the town, the county soil survey maps Purves gravelly silty clay on 1 to 5 percent slopes. One point can't speak for every lot, so each estimate begins with a look at the ground.
After a hard Great Depression, Oglesby began to recover once the United States entered World War II, and the naval ordnance plant between Oglesby and McGregor gave people in the area jobs. McGregor, on U.S. Highway 84, has its own concrete services page. Mother Neff State Park, on the Leon River, carries a Moody address, and concrete work in Moody covers that city, where State Highway 317 meets Farm Road 107.
