Gholson sits at the intersection of FM 933 and FM 1858, twelve miles northwest of Waco, and the Census Bureau places the whole city in McLennan County. Settlers came in the 1840s, when the area was known as Sardis; the post office took the name Gholson in 1887, after the early settlers Benjamin and Samuel Gholson. The Bureau estimates 1,274 residents as of July 1, 2025, up from an April 2020 estimates base of 1,173, and its 2020 Census counted 522 housing units.

McLennan County's soils are mostly dark clays, silty clays or clay loams, according to the 2001 county soil survey, with lighter sandy soils on terraces along the Brazos River. Near the FM 933 and FM 1858 crossing, the 1992 survey described sandy-loam terrace soils along the Brazos and North Bosque rivers, unlike the Blackland clays.
